January: Month in Review

January

  • Dubbing this year the year of micro-vacations to properly explore this very stunning country (Switzerland) and the surrounding regions. 100% inspired by the super well-written and beautifully photographed Montamont guides - with spotlights on Graubünden (Switzerland), Südtirol (Italy) and Voralberg (Austria).

  • On heavy rotation on Spotify: Reckoner by Radiohead. How is it that this song is already 17-years old?

  • Spent a ski weekend in Damüls (Voralberg). Beautiful pocket of Austria. Ski lifts were way too crowded but that’s another story. The wider region of Bregenzerwald has been on my list since reading this column from Tyler Brûlé in 2020. To quote him (and I agree): “There’s something very Japan about this place, no? The use of wood everywhere; the scale; the river running through the town centre; the cleanliness; the silence and the style of carpentry – it all reminds you of being in a nice little onsen town in Fukuoka, perhaps.”

  • Reviving this little space (only half done for now). IG is great but I kinda miss this.

  • Testing different podcasts for learning German on the go. Liking Coffee Break German so far.

  • Snowed in Basel, always a treat.

  • Captivated by the storytelling of a very long but very worthy read - an NZZ article on the story of a Swiss journalist in Delhi and his Nepalese housekeeper.

Read:

  • Homelands: A Personal History of Europe by Timothy Garton Ash

  • Israel by Noa Tishby

  • Imad’s Syrian Kitchen Syrian (Great read with stories interwoven along with the recipes.)
